Summary

Run your company。 Don’t let it run you。

Most business owners started their company because they wanted more freedom—to work on their own schedules, make the kind of money they deserve, and eventually retire on the fruits of their labor。

Unfortunately, according to John Warrillow, most owners find that stepping out of the picture is extremely difficult because their business relies too heavily on their personal involvement。 Without them, their company—no matter how big or profitable—is essentially worthless。

But the good news is that entrepreneurs can take specific steps—no matter what stage a business is in—to create a valuable, sellable company。 Warrillow shows exactly what it takes to create a solid business that can thrive long into the future。

A detailed guide for shifting (or creating) a business structure to something that isn't dependent on its founder。 The Herculean process is made clearer through a fictional story of a logo company。 I enjoyed this approach。 The dialogue and scenarios felt realistic, which itself is a major feat for "business fiction"。 Warrillow writes from experience and provides seventeen framework tips, given at the end of chapters。 There's also "Eight Steps for Creating a Company that Can Thrive Without You" a A detailed guide for shifting (or creating) a business structure to something that isn't dependent on its founder。 The Herculean process is made clearer through a fictional story of a logo company。 I enjoyed this approach。 The dialogue and scenarios felt realistic, which itself is a major feat for "business fiction"。 Warrillow writes from experience and provides seventeen framework tips, given at the end of chapters。 There's also "Eight Steps for Creating a Company that Can Thrive Without You" and "Six Forms of Recurring Revenue" that are hugely helpful as well。 。。。more

The fable format is not my favorite。 I appreciated the principles shared, such as the idea of systematizing your business so that it can run without you, but overall felt the book was a bit cringe and idealistic。

Excellent and engaging read that really made me think about my business aspirations。

An exceptionally easy-to-read yet informative book。 The author organized his learnings of selling a startup into an easily digestible story, through which he put down breadcrumbs of his lessons in deliberately designed story plots。Still being a student, the book gave me a few mindset shifts when looking at how to operate a business。 I learned that to make a profitable business, one possible way is to create a steadily-running positive cash flow machine, where your employees ideally can execute f An exceptionally easy-to-read yet informative book。 The author organized his learnings of selling a startup into an easily digestible story, through which he put down breadcrumbs of his lessons in deliberately designed story plots。Still being a student, the book gave me a few mindset shifts when looking at how to operate a business。 I learned that to make a profitable business, one possible way is to create a steadily-running positive cash flow machine, where your employees ideally can execute formalized steps of providing a service and your marketing team (of at least 2 salespersons) selling it as a product。 Avoid accessive customization for each customer and focus on one thing you specialize in。 Don't tie your personal identity with the business you're building。After reading the book, I understand more about how industry companies operate and it reflects the observations I have seen from the employees I know (e。g。 how an employee's daily work consists of repetitive tasks defined in a large procedure)。 I want to learn more about marketing as the next skill in an entrepreneur's arsenal。 。。。more

It’s very rare to find a book on business that shares a wealth of knowledge that doesn’t feel like reading a textbook。 John Warrillow does an amazing job of creating a fictitious story based on his experience and pro tips that helps to sink the concepts deeper。 Loves the writing style and this book is definitely a must read for anyone interesting in setting up a business that can run on its own。

Chris Regan

A very healthy reminder that the value of the business you’re building is centered around the product and processes you create。 Not you。

How often do you pick up a right book at a right time? My takeaway: Document。 Train。 Delegate。 Productize。 I have already started implementing it in my business。

My personal goal is for me and my collaborators to create a *sustainable* business, one that can be passed on to those who join it, rather than trying to shape it into something we could sell off at a high price; but many of the lessons do also apply if you're after plain sustainability。 This book is quite similar to The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It, by Michael Gerber, which I read some years ago, but was worth reading。 The author follows his own My personal goal is for me and my collaborators to create a *sustainable* business, one that can be passed on to those who join it, rather than trying to shape it into something we could sell off at a high price; but many of the lessons do also apply if you're after plain sustainability。 This book is quite similar to The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It, by Michael Gerber, which I read some years ago, but was worth reading。 The author follows his own advice in that he focuses sharply on exactly the points he's trying to make, rather than trying to be everything to everybody。 This, along with how he gives the information in story form, has enabled him to keep the book short and highly readable。 。。。more

Good book for anyone who wants to build a business that depends on a process but not a person, and sells it off。 A good book for any new entrepreneur who wants to know how a business should be。。。。

(audiobook edition) Insightful for any services business owner。 Even if you have no plans to sell your business (I certainly do not), this book helped me realize the value in adding structure, standardization and also eliminate my involvement from aspects of the business whenever possible。 This is a book any entrepreneur trying to run a consulting or coaching business should check out。 I found the audiobook version nice, but the narrator voice (not read by the author) didn't sound great to me as (audiobook edition) Insightful for any services business owner。 Even if you have no plans to sell your business (I certainly do not), this book helped me realize the value in adding structure, standardization and also eliminate my involvement from aspects of the business whenever possible。 This is a book any entrepreneur trying to run a consulting or coaching business should check out。 I found the audiobook version nice, but the narrator voice (not read by the author) didn't sound great to me as it sounded overly formal in speech。 。。。more

A must read book for every entrepreneurs who is starting a new business。 Gives you some ideas about how to set up a business in the right way so if gives you the reward you are looking for。 However, this can give a false impression in many ways。 In the fiction, everything sounds simple and easy which is totally opposite to what it takes to build a great business。

Must read!

I think most truths found in business books can be learned from classics and memoirs, where the ideas are communicated much clearer and more palatable。

Ernesto Nogueira

Very practical and hands-onI could definitely related many of my challenges in the story。 The book provides a practical path to turn your company from you (and chaos) towards an independent organism (system) that can grow faster and attract the interest from investors。

Nadine

Great tips on how to build a scalable business。

Kashaan Merchant

The ending of this book is the only thing that contains valuable advice, a condensation of points that are the purpose of the book, so concise it could have been a pamphlet。 The story was difficult to get through, and wholly unnecessary in my opinion。 When I picked up this book, I did so for the title, not hear “Alex” internally monologue about the curtains at “Ted’s” beach house。

Youssef El

Super easy read and very insightful, especially if you run an agency (or service business) and are in the process of exiting it。

Finished it in one day。 Good books and love the story format。 I’m not looking to sell my business but I am very pleased to learn more about creating system and processes。 Experiencing it through a story gives it a new perspective。

Really useful book set out as a case study of a business owner changing his business to make it less reliant on him and then selling it。 Key points are all summarised which makes it easy to refer back to。Don’t want to sell my business as I enjoy it too much but would like to reduce my own time needed on it so that I can do other things as well as work (like reading!)。

This book gives valuable information such as advice and tips for for entrepeneurial minds looking to successfully build or sell a company and who don’t really know what it will take。 It highlights the aspects buyers look for in companies and does so in a ‘storytelling’ way that makes it an easy read for most people and keeps you engaged。

I loved this。 Great primer on how to think about what a business is。 I'm betting people learn a lot of this stuff in business school, but I didn't go to business school。 It's helpful for me even as I think about finding a literary agent to help sell my book to a publisher。 What is a book for an author if not in part a small business?
